View Full Version : S.T. Dupont vs. Dunhill

How do these two brands compare?

Both great lighters. Both ok cigars.
Personally, I'm fond of the Ligne II Duponts. I've never been able to justify spending the money for a Rollagas.

The dunhill rollagas is a superior lighter, and will give you far fewer problems then the duponts. Also....no fiddely-farting around with little special gas units etc...

Dupont is a superior lighter, you can feel it in your hand. Much better quality, workmanship. Thats why I kept my dupont and traded my dunhill.

Hate to be the odd man out but I love my silver Dunhill Unique with its wide cigar flame. It's timeless design and lightweight compared to the Dupont, fits me to a T. I have had it for over a year and it performs flawlessly.
If I carried the Dupont in my side pants pocket every day (it's one heavy mama), the women would be "impressed" but I'd have a hernia.
I think they are both outstanding. Again, decide what's best for YOU.

I prefer the Dunhill's, both the Rollagas and the Unique. I have 3 Dunhills and have my Dupont on Ebay.

Those in the know use dunhill....all the posers use Dupont.

I have used both over the years and always come back to the Dunhill Unique. I agree with what HMS says, especially about the weight of a Dupont. I really dislike the special gas needed for a Dupont and like the simplicity of the Dunhill. In 20 years I have only had to replace flints in my Dunhills and they operate flawlessly.

I really hate reading this when someone responds this way to an honest question but I HAVE to respond with this:
Check the archives. Do a search with the following: MESSAGE TOPICS, DUNHILL, ACCESSORIES ROOM, and 6 MONTHS. You'll find a thread called "Dunhill or Dupont."
That was an EXCELLENT thread and I personally learned a lot from it. I hope you will too. As I said before, I hate when people answer with "check the archives" or "do a search will ya?" but in this case the PERFECT thread is waiting for you to read.
Hope it helps. Do you know what really matters? Check my sig-tag <IMG SRC='/cf4/images/smiley/smiley02.gif' BORDER=0 WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15>

Did I prefer the Dunhill or the Dupont then Brandon? I'm getting old and I can't remember.
Searches, archives, passwords, user id's, sig-tags . . . you're drivin' me nuts kid.
Gee, I wish someone would echo Brandon's thoughts when the next newbie starts the inevitable thread, "Wrapper On or Off?" (The last guy that asked that question, I advised that cigars should always be smoked with their wrappers on as plastic is a proven anti-oxidant.
Sorry, did I get off the subject? Best, HMS

All of my older Dunhills have the same problem....the seals fail and they don't hold gas any more. My DuPonts aren't as old but none leak (yet).

HMS, no no....you mis-understand. I was in no way slandering or taking a cheap shot at the poster, his question, you, or anyone else. I always find it funny when someone answers "check the archives, do a search" type answer, and then I turn around and answer it that same manner. HOWEVER, I was pointing to a specific thread, (the one in which yourself and yours truly posted on) and I thought it was a GREAT thread on the topic. I found it to be very informative, and thought JYing could benefit as well. Unfortunately, you've GOTTA do the search in order to find it. Its buried deep! <IMG SRC='/cf4/images/smiley/smiley01.gif' BORDER=0 WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15> ALOHA!!!

Duponts are my choice.

Brandon, I was just pulling your chain amigo. I knew what you were up to and applaud your efforts. Not to worry. I say hold these lazy rascals' tuchies to the fire. Make them earn their keep. Keep me from posting the same information over and over again.
Archive! Search! Find! Brandon is absolutely right. I like this kid's style (I know he's a youngin' because when I was growing up, nobody was named Brandon).

BTW 95% of the time I use $3.99 blazzer knockoffs. LOL

Yes but you don't see the looks of distain behind your back. LOL
June 28, 2002, 05:28 AM
Brandon...top the old thread please. Tks.

I have one of each and love them both. Haven't had a problem with my rollgas or gatsby yet and plan on getting an L2 for the birthday.
A great lighter is a part of the smoking experience, imo.

Doh! Smokinmama....good idea. The thought didn't even cross my mind. I'll do it right after I hit post.
